How does it work? The active ingredient in most spray tanning products is a sugar derivative called DHA, or dihydroxyacetone. This 3 carbon sugar reacts with amino acids in the skins outermost layer to produce a darkening effect of the skin. Unlike sun-tanning, which penetrates into the deepest layers of your skin, the DHA interacts only with the most superficial layer of the skin. DHA has been approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics since 1977.
